Meet The Maker - Linda Shiliday

Published on 22 Feb 2022

We asked a few questions to one of Orior's longest standing craftsperson, to give an insight into the family business.

Orior

Where are you from and where do you currently live?

Linda

I currently live in a small town called Rathfriland, Northern Ireland which is just outside my hometown, Newry.

Orior

When and how did you start working with Orior?

Linda

I started working with Orior in April 2000. I was made redundant from my first ever job at a stitching factory. My brother worked besides Orior and told me that they make furniture, so I went straight in and asked if they needed a sewer, and the rest is history.

Orior

How did you get into sewing?

Linda

When I finished school I decided to earn some money before I would return to my education. I fell in love with sewing and realized this is something that I wanted to do so... I never returned.

Orior

What is your favourite piece and why?

Linda

I love the Canyon sofa. It's so neat with its one long seat cushion and just a sofa you can be polite on or just stretch out.

Orior

What gives you the most satisfaction as a sewer?

Linda

I get most satisfaction from working on a piece and then seeing the end product before it is shipped worldwide. I also love being part of the Orior team.

Orior

Who would you say you are closest with at Orior?

Linda

I have grew close to a lot of the figures at Orior but the one in particular would be Gertrude (Founder Brian McGuigans Sister). She has been my mentor through the years at Orior but also in every day life experiences. She is my go-to for advice.
